A diverting pastime in Quedgeley – Dreamstore Group Award.

Dreamstore’s Group Award this year goes to Angling for Youth Development (AFYD) Gloucester.

The group has been steered by local PC Lucy Winterburn (née Kay) who gathered a team of local volunteers who were keen to help local kids become engaged with angling as a pastime.

Dreamstore provided coaching training for a team from Quedgeley at the outset. Since then, the group has taken responsibility for a small pond opposite Gloucester Police HQ. With the help of local businesses and the Environment Agency the pond has been cleaned and transformed with new paths and pegs. The pond will be used as the centre of AFYD activities in the Quedgeley area.

AFYD Gloucester has demonstrated the power of voluntary action and Dreamstore believes the Group Award, supported by the Environment Agency, is well deserved. The Group has progressed massively since it first started, and promises a great deal in the future.

Before a formal ‘Open Day’ at the new pool at the end of April, the group organised a 5 hr match on Sunday 13th April, fished by members in memory of Gill Smith an AFYD volunteer coach who died last year. Getting to this point has had its ups and downs. Gill was a great character and a lovely man who had been hugely enthusiastic about helping and supporting young people in the area – and an annual Shield will be presented in his memory.

PC Lucy Winterburn, who initiated the AFYD Gloucester programme commented:

“With regards to the Award given by Dreamstore, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank the group as a whole for all their hard work, support and belief in not only the project but also me. We are now taking bookings for our Open Day on the 27th April and I know all the coaches are very much looking forward to fishing with local young people.”

Well done Lucy and the team.

The Dreamstore Active Group Award, supported by the Environment Agency, is presented to a Club, Association, or Society that has demonstrated an ability to generate and sustain membership, and undertaken innovative and imaginative programmes or activities that have opened participation to new anglers and provided a welcoming environment to all those who take part in Club, Association, or Society activities. The fishing Club, Association or Society is at the heart of the network of contacts and friendships that stretch across the nation; bringing people together and providing a focal point for all those who share a particular passion for angling. The best will be strong and growing, show a special ability to engage with both anglers and the general public to attract new members, or have undertaken a new activity that has greatly enhanced the value and participation of angling in a local area or among a particular group of people. The Group Award recognises the tremendous organisation and energy of a body of people who are directly promoting and strengthening the angling fraternity and enhancing an appreciation of angling among the wider public. – See more at: Dreamstore Active Awards
