Social Inclusion Award

Get Hooked on Fishing

Sponsored by Dreamstore
Social Inclusion Award

Wayne Collins and Josh Blythe received the
Award on behalf of GHOF.

Social inclusion is about attitudes as much as opportunities. Its about creating opportunity for those who might not otherwise be involved, those who we might think would not want to be involved - because our attitudes suggest that they would not ‘fit in’ with the crowd, with our crowd, with our friends, or for whatever reason. It is not always deliberate exclusion, for deliberate reasons. Our attitudes are often passive - because that’s the way it is, perhaps that's the way it has always been. Yet while exclusion may not be deliberate, passive inclusion is not really going to make a difference.

The 2004 Award was for an idea that has very much made a difference.
In presenting this award Dreamstore acknowledges the strength of the idea every bit as much as the development of the organisation. The idea has extended further than the base of the organisation, being translated beyond its original home and developed sometimes improved upon in North Wales, Birmingham, and elsewhere. It is an idea that is still growing, expanding, finding new applications and helping make a difference to young people all over the country, creating access and opening opportunity. Most of all it encourages young people to take responsibility for themselves, for their environment and for others.

It was appropriate that the 2004 Award was presented to two young people from very different backgrounds who have been helped and who are now helpers to one of the programmes. The inaugural Social Inclusion Award 2004, sponsored by Dreamstore, is to Get Hooked on Fishing.
