The Essex Association of Boys Clubs organised its first ever deep sea fishing trip in March 2007. The trip was possible with the generous support of Dreamstore, which supports the educational and recreational value of angling.
Six young people and Keith Cranmer, a Boys Club officer, left from Bradwell and went out into the North Sea. The group fished off the Kingfisher, though due to weather conditions the boat stayed in the estuary rather than venturing out to sea. This did not spoil the enjoyment for the young people, particularly the youngest in the group, James Clasby, who caught the biggest cod of the day. Everyone caught fish, in total around twenty-five, mostly small codling, whiting, dogs and a couple of thornbacks.
A second fishing trip took place a month later in April.
This time the boat took the fishing party sixteen miles out from Bradwell. Over forty fish were caught and most were skate up to 12lbs. As well as dog fish, the young people also caught two good sized cod and two small whiting. Everything added up to another great day out, this time in perfect weather conditions.
