Earlier this year Dreamstore was approached by the Cornwall County Girl Guiding Rainbows, the youngest of the Guide movement, about a milestone event for its 30th Anniversary to be held in September 2017.
Hannah Hepton, Assistant Rainbow Adviser for Cornwall, suggested:
“We would like to get the Rainbows to try new things and fishing would be something very new for many of them. My 7 year old enjoys fishing with her Dad and it would be wonderful to encourage more girls to take up this fantastic pastime and all the benefits it could unlock.”
Rainbows are girls aged five to seven and follow a programme called the Rainbow Jigsaw, through which they can take part in lots of different activities with girls their own age and have fun. In Cornwall there are 60 Rainbow units bringing together over 700 girls in both town and rural locations.
The 30th anniversary event was held at the Royal Cornwall Showground at Wadebridge and attended by nearly 400 Rainbows along with Leaders and helpers.
The chosen theme for the celebration was “Under the Sea” with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and conservation activities, crafts, games, yoga, bouncy castle and funfair.
A hectic but very enjoyable day with lots of enthusiastic Rainbows handling rods and learning how to avoid tangles as well as catching the fish, and developing hand-eye co-ordination.
The theme was perfect for Dreamstore and especially for our Cornish partner, Angling-School, to participate in the event. Angling School, which is very much oriented to sea angling and conservation, brought its Dreamstore EAZ Fishing Activity. This had the Rainbows “catching”, and then identifying and learning about, the different types of fish.
Hopefully the day unlocked a little inspiration and interest in all things under the sea.
