Under a big umbrella

May 19, 2010 in All Articles, Community, Disability, Small Grants, Social Inclusion by editor

Glamorgan Anglers Club has an active community programme, always seeking to broaden the offer at its waters for people of all ages and ability. The Club is very much focused on angling participation for all and has been particularly active finding ways to increase angling access for the disabled angler.

The Club requested a small grant from Dreamstore, to cover the cost of five very large umbrellas.  The Browning umbrella is 2.5 metres wide when open, which allows a wheelchair user and helper stay dry from the rain or shaded from a hot sun.  Dreamstore is delighted to see that good use is being made of the umbrellas and that this small grant goes a long way to improving the angling experience for the disabiled angler.

Southlands Fishing Club

April 2, 2010 in All Articles, Disability, Small Grants by editor

Southlands Angling Club is a project within Southlands School, near Lymington, Hampshire. Southlands School is a residential special school for around 50 boys aged 9- 16 years old with a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome and associated conditions.

Most of the pupils are of average or above average ability; however significant difficulties in a range of key areas of development affect their everyday life. These difficulties may embrace social understanding and communication, flexibility of thinking, motor skills, coordination and sequencing skills, attention and concentration, and anxiety when faced with new situations or change. Challenging or manipulative behaviour is a common response to anxiety making it difficult to access mainstream community facilities without support. These skills have to be taught gradually over time. Many pupils have very low self confidence and self- esteem and find the classroom learning environment extremely challenging.

Within the grounds of the school there was a small disused lake. Some pupils expressed interest in fishing this lake. It became clear that fishing, even using a stick with line, was a positive experience and more importantly our lake had fish. The interest in fishing snowballed, with the school council suggesting restoration of the lake so that pupils can use it as part of “Southlands Fishing Club” during evenings and at weekends.

Two taster days were arranged with “Fun 2 Fish” where 12 pupils were given the opportunity to try fishing with professional coaching. These days were a fantastic learning experience. Pupils who normally have difficulty managing their anxiety, controlling their behaviour and remaining on task in the classroom, spent 5 hours at the lake; fully engaged, relaxed and thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Lifestyle choice opened for John Grooms

July 16, 2007 in All Articles, Disability, Projects, Small Grants by admin

John Grooms Charity works to provide residential care and housing for disabled people, so they achieve greater independence, choice and freedom. Dreamstore was approached to support a Lifestyles Choices Project in Bedfordshire which aimed to develop a programme for disabled adults to become more involved in social, leisure, and educational activities outside their homes. In mid-July the BDAA organised a day for around 20 John Groom clients.

Scott Richardson, Project Manager for Lifestyle Choices, wrote a thank you and commented on the day:

“ On behalf of our clients who attended the disabled fishing day on 16th July, I would like to thank Dreamstore for its financial assistance that significantly contributed to a very successful ‘taster’ day.

The terrific weather, well-stocked swims (at Manor Farm Fisheries) and expert guidance from Terry Moseley and his BDAA team of instructors made it a fantastic day for our clients, from whom I heard nothing but positive comments.

Disabled fishing is an activity we would be very keen to develop, as our service encourages clients to engage (and ultimately independently continue) in social and leisure activities. Therefore, we are hoping to establish a self-sustaining disabled fishing group.

There are some obvious barriers in achieving this goal, primarily access.  However, with the involvement of Terry and the BDAA we are hopeful to overcome these and establish a disabled fishing group in Bedfordshire. I am sure it would be well supported.

Many thanks again for Dreamstore’s financial support and encouragement.”

Servicemen and ex-servicemen – coaching support

Ian Houlton is an ex-serviceman on the South Coast. He has a brain injury. He introduces visually impaired people, and their friends and family, to sea angling. He will join in with the RNC Angling Club to offer sea angling ‘getting-started’ tips and offer some examples. He has also volunteered to offer angling tuition days out for Help for Heroes, noting that choosing remote fishing spots adds to providing a calming and relaxing place for servicemen who need some space.

Darrel White has a spinal injury as the result of an accident. He is keen to establish an angling coaching activity within the Back-Up Trust. Dreamstore is discussing this possibility with Darrel and regards the RNC Angling Club as a format that may be useful once Darrel resolves to move forward.

He is the driving force of South Staffs Angling for Everyone, which is a volunteer group offering coaching days at this angling venue specifically designed for people with disability. Over 30 groups are coached in the course of one year.

Westhaven School, Weston-Super-Mare

July 6, 2006 in All Articles, Disability, Projects, Small Grants by admin

Dreamstore provided a small grant to Westhaven School, Weston-super-Mare to book the British Disabled Angling Association team of coaches for a fishing day at Cider Farm fishery near Brean, Somerset. Westhaven School was delighted at the response of the students, who have learning difficulties, to the angling day out. The school had struggled to find a local outdoor activity that catered for its students.

The B.D.A.A. coaches will be returning to Westhaven in the new school year to offer group support and further angling opportunity, introducing the DEAZ to the West Country. The school was particularly pleased at the way the students interacted with the coaches and helpers on the waterside and was encouraged at the potential, through angling, of studentss’ ability to learn interactive skills.

Visual Impairment – website support from work of RNC Angling Club

RNC Angling Club Pics and weblink

Barry Morris works as Lead Project Officer for enrichment support at the Royal National College for the Blind. He joined the Academy to provide a more skilled coaching experience for a few of the students at RNC who fished from time to time. Once he understood the potential of the coaching facility he approached Dreamstore for support. The upshot of discussion is the RNC Angling Club.

This is more a web Club than an organisation. Using experience at the College, Barry hopes to provide a web based resource that offers advice and support to those with a visual impairment who wish to fish.

The Stroke Association

October 31, 2005 in All Articles, Disability, Projects, Small Grants by admin

The South Liverpool Dysphasia Support unit, managed by the Stroke Association approached the BDAA to organise a fishing ‘day out’ for the group. Dreamstore assisted by covering the cost of a disability friendly portable toilet to improve the appropriateness of the chosen fishery near Crewe, Cheshire. The group included a couple of men who had fished before their strokes, and a number of volunteers who were sceptical about the suitability of angling for the members. That scepticism was banished on the day. Everyone, those who had had a stroke and those volunteers who assisted on the day, had a marvellous time.

The BDAA coaches showed how disability could be overcome. Most important was a BDAA coach who had one arm, which gave huge encouragement to those who had had a stroke: especially to the two who had previously fished and had thought they would never again be able to enjoy their favourite pastime. Plans are currently in place to develop a fishing club attached to the Dysphasia Support group to provide a long-term interest for those with a stroke, to empower and engage members and volunteers in a positive and accessible pastime. Dreamstore will support this initiative in 2006 once the Club is established.
