Angling needs diverse approach to development

Angling Unlimited in the West Midlands is one of the few substantial charities that uses angling as its core activity promoting social inclusion, community and individual development.

The 2017 Annual Report from Angling Unlimited shows value angling in reaching individuals and communities. The range and scope of activities and participants is hugely impressive, with hundreds of people being introduced to angling and developing their angling skills.

Dreamstore supported Angling Unlimited in two of its innovative projects.

Dreamstore match funded Braidwood School for the Deaf for the delivery of a twelve week Duke of Edinburgh Bronze course – a first for the school; and for UK Deaf Sports which also contributed to the programme.

In the second half of 2017 we match funded Sports Birmingham to deliver a pilot 8 week programme at Hockley Day Centre as part of a wider ports programme for adults with physical & mental disabilities. This activity was based on Dreamstore’s Education Action Zone and was so popular a number of other Community Centres and Care Homes have expressed interest in extending this indoor activity in 2018.

These are just two examples of activities from Angling Unlimited. Additionally it has a Totally Hooked scheme that supports adults with dementia, or those who have had a stroke – encouraging engagement and companionship. Mentoring projects support young people with learning difficulties, and befriending programmes encourage young and old to share angling knowledge.

Angling Unlimited organises a fly fishing club for juniors and fly tying classes for seniors. It is worth reading the Annual Report to see the range and scope of activities.

Feedback is the best endorsement. This example is from Adam Smith, Deputy Head teacher at North Bromsgrove High School & Sixth Form:

Each of the Year 9 males were referred for different reasons ranging from inconsistent attendance, low self-esteem and challenging behaviour and lack of general engagement with school. Each of the boys has expressed a genuine appreciation of the opportunity they have accessed and has displayed visible and verbal pride and passion in their achievements. The expression of their success to staff on return to school has been heart-warming and valuable. The member of staff who has been supervising the boys cannot speak highly enough of the boy’s attitude and engagement, whilst giving glowing praise also with regard to the quality and role of the coaches who have delivered the programme.

Angling Unlimited raises funds from many sources. Dreamstore greatly appreciated a thank you letter from Angling Unlimited in respect of Dreamstore’s contribution summing up what funding means to a small charity such as Angling Unlimited:

During the prolonged difficult economic pressures your commitment to financially supporting Angling Unlimited has enabled us to continue to have the privilege of helping others through our many programmes and activities. Your support has continued to provide the very foundation of our work and has literally made our work possible.

Thanks to all at Angling Unlimited for their commitment to making a difference to the lives of so many, though angling.
