Edith Borthwick is a special needs school for children from four to nineteen years old, catering for moderate to severe learning difficulties and autism. One of the teachers has a personal interest in angling and she has recruited young people in the 14-19 age group who are interested in taking part in an angling programme. The headmaster is enthusiastic about the potential of non-academic learning, particularly in helping to improve the pupils’ co-ordination and concentration.
There is the enormous benefit of a pond adjacent to the school which makes water easily accessible. The outdoor programme will begin in early spring 2006. Dreamstore has supported this programme by providing advice and an accessibility audit by the British Disabled Anglers Association on the pond and on the angling programme.
