Getting started 2015 – where tech helps.

Over the winter months we completed another successful Dreamstore Academy in Scotland, for participants working with Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network and Angling for Youth Development. It was an interesting course, not least in being able to discuss with the SSACN participants how they will be using the skills-set to enhance their educational outreach work. All the best to Edward and Samantha, two great additions to the SSACN team.

Also interesting was the way in which the participants, with a focus on working in a contemporary educational environment were using technology as session aids. On that point, technology is increasingly providing valuable support aids.

An essential part of the Dreamstore Academy course is the First Aid module. While part of the course, the session is opened to all those who have previously completed the Level 2 and need to keep up to date on First Aid. One of those was Ewen, who emailed later to note that the St John’s Ambulance handout fitted perfectly with a phone app from St John’s Ambulance. “Having the app continuously available increases ones confidence and potential usefulness in a crisis” reports Ewen.  The App is available both on iTunes and on GooglePlay for Android and is free.

Attending refresher courses can be difficult – in a busy world that one opportunity may not be convenient. There are alternatives which offer greater flexibility. Online is becoming increasingly valuable as an access point. This refresher course on Safeguarding from Coachwise is a useful tool, and an inexpensive and flexible alternative.

If there are any other examples any or our partners or readers would like to share, where technology is helping voluntary organisations develop, let us know.
